To B or Not to B

Queen B (a.k.a. Blair Waldorf – one of the most talked about Upper East Siders). She is the sole reason for the comeback of the headband. She is the sole reason for this blog post. (Note: That is an extreme exaggeration, but work with it for now.)

Now many of you that have seen even part of Gossip Girl may be wondering why I would ever choose such a personality to admire. Blair Waldorf was not exactly voted “Nicest” or “Most Approachable” in high school. She lied and manipulated others as if they were pawns in her game. She could make someone cry faster than you would believe is possible.

However, she possesses the most admirable work ethic, has the biggest heart when she lets people see it, and makes things happen for herself. For example, Blair Waldorf is responsible for faxing every machine in a big New York based magazine’s office in order to get the attention of the person she wanted to intern for. That is dedication.

There are so many career paths or fun dreams to follow out there in the world. As I brainstormed ideas for my last blog of a semester long project, all I knew is that I did not want to leave this site with just another post.

So if I did not want to become a doctor what would I be? No matter what I do or pursue in life, I will choose to be empowered. And just like Blair Waldorf, “What I want to be is a powerful woman.” This is not to say a rise to the top of a hospital or business must be the ultimate goal. Rather, I want to wake up to a life and career that is respectable, well-meaning for myself and to others, and fulfilling in a way that is not financially.

BuzzFeed was even kind enough to put together “17 Lessons Blair Waldorf Taught You About Life.” A few of my favorites include:

  • “Know who you are and own that sh*t.”

  • “No matter how sh*tty you think your life is, there’s always something in it worth smiling about.”

  • “You can’t let anything get in the way of going after what you want.”

  • “You have to make things happen for yourself.”

  • “Don’t let anyone steal or disrupt your happiness.”

  • “Be fearless in saying how you truly feel, whether that’s in love, in your work, or in a friendship.”

So here’s to all the women out there. Be good friends, sisters, teammates, or whatever your role is. You do not have to have everything figured out at this moment. But do not be afraid to let your inner Blair Waldorf shine a little. IMPORTANT: Stick with her positive, overachiever qualities, though. Keep dreaming big. As for Blair Waldorf, she will be “…joining the Peace Corps, getting a killer tan, winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and having dinner with the president, who would then have to write her a recommendation to Yale, and Yale would fall all over themselves to accept her.”

Go for it.
